Lily’s fingers trembled as she traced the cool, smooth metal of the locket. It lay nestled in her palm, a forgotten treasure unearthed from the damp earth behind the rose bushes. The garden, usually a place of quiet beauty, had felt charged with a strange energy that afternoon, as if it too held its breath, waiting for her to discover its secret. She’d almost dismissed the glint of metal as a discarded piece of foil, but something, a whisper of intuition, had drawn her closer. Now, the weight of it in her hand felt significant, a promise of answers she desperately craved.

She’d expected to find a miniature portrait, perhaps of a former owner, or even a faded photograph of the Sterling family before her arrival. But what lay inside was far more intriguing, far more promising. Instead of a picture, a tiny, impossibly intricate drawing was etched onto the smooth surface of the locket’s interior. It was a drawing of a key.
