The musty scent of aging paper clung to the air in Dr. Vance’s study, a comforting contrast to the metallic tang of unease that had become my constant companion. Sunlight, thick with dust motes, slanted through the tall windows, illuminating shelves crammed with tomes that whispered of forgotten lore. Dr. Vance, a woman whose intellect was as sharp as the crease in her tweed skirt, carefully traced a passage in the ancient text spread between us. Her brow was furrowed, her usual calm replaced by a flicker of something akin to awe, or perhaps dread.
“It’s… remarkable, Detective,” she murmured, her voice barely a whisper. “The descriptions are uncannily precise. This isn’t merely a legend of a cursed object; it speaks of a consciousness.”
I leaned closer, the words blurring slightly under my strained gaze. ‘The Obsidian Eye,’ the text called it, a mirror forged not of glass and silver, but of solidified shadow and regret. It was said to have no true reflection, only a canvas upon which the deepest, most desperate desires of the viewer could be projected. And then, the chilling part: it fed. It fed on the yearning, the ambition, the gnawing emptiness that drove men and women to seek solace or success in its depths. The more potent the desire, the stronger its hold. The more fervent the hope, the deeper the trap.
