The hum of the ship was a low thrum against my bones, a constant reminder that Earth was no longer beneath our feet, but a distant, shimmering marble. Outside the viewport, the void was a canvas of impossible beauty and terrifying emptiness. Stars, like scattered diamonds on black velvet, pulsed with ancient light. Nebulae swirled in hues of amethyst and emerald, vast cosmic paintings that dwarfed everything we knew. But there was no time to marvel. Every flicker of light, every shift in the ship’s trajectory, was a potential threat, a puzzle piece in the grand, frightening mystery of where our loved ones had been taken.

Tamera, usually so buoyant, was a tight knot of worry beside me. Her eyes, wide and perpetually scanning the instruments, betrayed a fear she tried to mask with a forced bravery. Celine, bless her little heart, was asleep, curled on a makeshift bed of blankets, her thumb tucked into her mouth. She’d cried herself to exhaustion after the initial shock, and now, in her slumber, she was a fragile reminder of what we were fighting for. Azarah, ever the optimist, was fiddling with a console, her brow furrowed in concentration but a faint smile playing on her lips. She was trying to decipher the faint energy signatures we’d been tracking, the breadcrumbs the alien had left, or perhaps, had been forced to leave.

"Anything, Zara?" I asked, my voice raspy from disuse. The silence in the ship was a heavy blanket, punctuated only by the ship’s systems and our own breathing.
