The air hung thick and heavy, not with the usual summer humidity, but with a palpable tension that clung to us like a second skin. Darkness had descended, swallowing the familiar contours of our neighborhood, leaving only the distant pinpricks of streetlights and the vast, indifferent expanse of the night sky. Our little ship, a cobbled-together marvel of salvaged parts and sheer desperation, hummed with a nervous energy, its metallic shell glinting faintly under the shroud of night. It wasn't sleek, or polished, or anything resembling the gleaming vessels I'd only ever seen in movies. It was raw, a testament to what happens when necessity breeds invention in the face of unimaginable loss.

Inside, the cramped cockpit was a symphony of nervous breaths and the frantic thumping of our hearts. Tamera sat beside me, her knuckles white as she gripped the edge of her seat, her gaze fixed on the flickering array of borrowed instruments. Azarah, ever the optimist, was trying to keep spirits up with a nervous joke, her voice a little too high, a little too strained. Celine, her small face pale and her eyes wide with a mixture of fear and awe, was nestled between us, her small hand clutching Tamera's sleeve like a lifeline. Mia, bless her brave little heart, was tucked away in the back, her breathing slow and steady, a stark contrast to the storm raging within me. She slept, or at least pretended to, a quiet presence that was both my anchor and my constant, gnawing ache.

The engines whined, a rising crescendo that vibrated through the floor, through our very bones. It was a sound of defiance, a desperate plea sent out into the void. Then, with a jolt that sent a tremor through my already frayed nerves, we began to move. Slowly at first, a hesitant crawl across the dewy grass of the abandoned field, then a surge, lifting us from the familiar embrace of Earth. The ground fell away, the houses shrinking into toy-like miniatures, the streetlights dissolving into a scattered constellation of earthly lights.
