Before Ivanka could formulate a plan, her friends Tamera and others rushed in with alarming news. Celine, Tamera's younger sister, burst out, tearfully reporting that her own grandmother had been taken by the same alien.

The afternoon sun, which had moments before felt like the warm embrace of a forgotten friend, now beat down with an almost accusatory intensity. I stood there, the silence of my empty house a deafening roar in my ears, the image of my mother’s sacrifice replaying with brutal clarity. Mia, my precious Mia, gone. And with her, a piece of me had been ripped away, leaving a gaping wound that no amount of sunlight could ever hope to heal. My mind, usually a whirlwind of ideas and plans, felt sluggish, heavy with grief and a terrifying sense of helplessness. What could I possibly do? I was just a girl, sixteen years old, and the universe had just thrown its most cruel hand at me.

Then, a frantic pounding on the door shattered the oppressive quiet. It was Tamera, her face streaked with tears and dust, her breath coming in ragged gasps. Behind her, Azarah and Maya, their expressions mirroring Tamera’s panic. They were my anchors, my confidantes, my other half in this fractured world.

“Ivanka!” Tamera cried, her voice trembling. “Did you… did you see the news?”
