It was beautiful, achingly so, and for the first time since that horrifying summer day, a sliver of peace settled in my chest. Mia, her small hand tucked into mine, was finally safe. Her breath, soft and even, was the sweetest music. The memory of Mother’s sacrifice, a wound that would never truly heal, was still a raw ache, but it was now tempered by the fierce joy of Mia’s presence. And then there was Grandma Elara, her eyes still a little wide with wonder, her grip on my arm a comforting weight. The alien, the one who had shattered our world, was no longer a phantom of terror but a defeated adversary, its motives revealed, its power broken. We had faced the unknown and emerged, not unscathed, but victorious.
“Are we really home, Ivanka?” Mia whispered, her voice still raspy from disuse.
I squeezed her hand. “We’re home, little one. Safe and sound.”
