Homeward Bound

The journey back to Earth was filled with relief and exhaustion. The sisters were reunited, the grandmother safe, and Ivanka had proven her strength, her courage shining brightly as they approached their blue planet.

The hum of the ship’s engines was a lullaby now, a gentle thrumming that vibrated through the deck plates and into my very bones. It was a sound of progress, of return, a stark contrast to the cacophony of fear and desperation that had filled our lives for what felt like an eternity. Beside me, Mia slept, her small hand curled around mine, her breaths soft and even. She was safe. My mother, though gone, had ensured it. And now, Nana was here too, tucked away in the small med-bay, her frail body recovering from the ordeal, but her spirit, I could tell, was already mending. The relief was a physical ache, a loosening of knots I hadn't realized were so tightly wound.

Tamera sat across from me, her gaze fixed on the swirling nebula that painted the viewport in hues of violet and emerald. Her usual boisterous energy was subdued, replaced by a quiet contentment. Azarah, ever the optimist, was humming a tuneless melody as she tinkered with a recalcitrant sensor on the navigation console. Even with the alien threat neutralized, her father's friend, Commander Thorne, had insisted on a thorough systems check. "Better safe than sorry, Ivanka," he'd said, his voice gruff but kind. "Especially after what you've all been through."

"It still feels unreal," Tamera murmured, her voice barely above a whisper. "That we actually did it. We went to space, we found them, we… we saved them."
