The hum of the escape pod was a frantic heartbeat against the vast, silent canvas of space. Mia, nestled securely in my arms, stirred, her small fingers tightening around my shirt. Her breath, warm and shallow, ghosted against my collarbone. Beside me, Celine’s grandmother, frail but remarkably composed, clutched a worn, embroidered handkerchief, her knuckles white. The alien citadel, a grotesque monument to its creator’s twisted ambition, receded behind us, a scar on the inky blackness. Its metallic tendrils, moments ago our jailers, now seemed to writhe in impotent fury.

“Are we… safe, Ivanka?” Celine’s grandmother’s voice was a reedy whisper, laced with a tremor that belied her outward calm.

I squeezed Mia tighter, forcing a confidence I didn’t entirely feel. “As safe as we can be, Grandma Elara. We’re away. We’re flying home.” I avoided her gaze, the memory of the alien’s chilling, multi-faceted eyes still too vivid. Its hunger, not for sustenance, but for something far more insidious, gnawed at me.
