The air in the alien vessel hummed with a low, resonant thrum, a sound that vibrated not just in my ears, but deep within my bones. It was a constant reminder of our alien surroundings, a testament to the impossible journey we had undertaken. Behind me, Tamera and Azarah worked with a desperate intensity, their faces illuminated by the flickering light of their makeshift tools. The metallic tang of ozone and something else, something sharp and alien, stung my nostrils.
“Anything, Tamera?” I whispered, my voice tight with a mixture of hope and dread. My eyes darted between the two of them and the faint glow emanating from the chamber where Mia and Celine’s grandmother were being held. The alien, a being of shifting, iridescent light and impossibly sharp angles, had finally revealed its purpose, though its motives remained shrouded in a chilling ambiguity. It sought… something. Something it believed was within the minds of the abducted.
Tamera grunted, her brow furrowed in concentration. A small, sparking device was clamped to a panel near the energy field that contained our loved ones. “Almost… The temporal lock is more complex than it looks. It’s like they’re anchored in a slightly different moment.” She wiped a bead of sweat from her forehead with the back of her hand, smearing a streak of alien grime across her skin. “Azarah, can you reroute the secondary flux capacitor? I need a surge, just for a second.”
