Julian Croft’s handshake was firm, almost too firm, a calculated show of respect that, to Detective Miles Corbin’s discerning eye, felt more like a subtle assertion of dominance. Croft, a man whose ambition seemed to cling to him like expensive cologne, stood beside the imposing mahogany desk in Alistair Finch’s study, a room that still held the faint, unsettling scent of death. The air, thick with the unspoken weight of Finch’s demise, seemed to press down on Croft, yet he navigated it with an unnerving ease.

“A terrible business, Detective,” Croft said, his voice a smooth baritone, devoid of any genuine shock. “Mr. Finch was… a force. His absence will be felt, no doubt.”

Corbin watched him, his gaze sharp, missing nothing. Croft’s tailored suit was immaculate, his tie perfectly knotted, his dark hair precisely combed. He was the picture of a man who had everything under control, even the unfolding tragedy of his mentor’s death. Corbin had already established that Croft was Finch’s second-in-command at Finch Holdings, a position that had undoubtedly come with its own set of frustrations and simmering resentments.
