Eleanor Vance was a portrait of composure, a finely sculpted figure against the stark, grief-stricken backdrop of Alistair Finch’s opulent manor. She moved with a grace that seemed almost alien to the hushed, somber atmosphere, her every gesture measured, her voice a low, resonant murmur that offered condolences without betraying a flicker of genuine sorrow. Detective Miles Corbin watched her from across the cavernous drawing-room, a room that felt more like a museum than a home, filled with a lifetime’s accumulation of wealth and, Corbin suspected, secrets. He’d been observing her since his arrival, noting the way her elegant hands, adorned with a single, substantial sapphire ring, clasped and unclasped in her lap, the almost imperceptible tightness around her eyes that could be interpreted as grief, or something far more complex.

“Mr. Finch was a man of… singular vision, Detective,” Eleanor said, her gaze sweeping over the ornate mantelpiece as if searching for a lost memory. “He built an empire from nothing. A true titan.”

Corbin inclined his head, his own gaze fixed on her. “And you, Ms. Vance, were instrumental in that empire’s construction?”
