Alex, with Coco trotting faithfully beside him, turned towards the right-hand path. The dense trees loomed, their branches interlacing overhead like a giant, leafy ceiling, casting dappled shadows on the forest floor. The air grew cooler here, a hushed stillness settling around them, broken only by the rustle of leaves under Coco’s paws and the occasional chirping of a hidden bird. Alex held the book tightly, its pages still whispering promises of a magnificent, scaly friend. He imagined Felix, his scales shimmering like a thousand tiny jewels, his eyes the color of a summer sky, perhaps waiting just around the next bend.

They walked for what felt like a long time. The path wound deeper into the woods, becoming narrower and more overgrown. Thorny brambles reached out like curious fingers, snagging at Alex’s trousers. Coco, ever the explorer, would occasionally dart ahead, sniffing at interesting roots and fallen logs, only to bound back to Alex’s side with a happy wag of her tail. Alex kept his eyes peeled, scanning the undergrowth, peering behind thick tree trunks, and even looking up into the canopy, half-expecting to see a flash of blue and purple.

But there was nothing. No dragon. No sign of magic. Just trees, and more trees. The silence, which had initially felt peaceful, began to feel a little…empty. A knot of disappointment began to tighten in Alex’s stomach. He’d been so sure. The book had been so clear. Surely, if the dragon was real, it would be somewhere in this vast, mysterious forest.
