The parchment, brittle as dried autumn leaves, crackled under my fingertips. Samuel’s breath hitched beside me, a tiny puff of anticipation in the hushed air of the Whispering Woods. We had followed the ink-drawn lines, the faded symbols, the meandering path that had started with such mystery in Father’s dusty study. Each twist and turn had been a question, each rustle of leaves a whispered answer, and now, here we were.

The trees around us seemed to draw back, as if in reverence, parting to reveal a sight that stole the very air from my lungs. It was a glade, unlike any I had ever imagined. The grass was a richer, deeper green, studded with flowers that shimmered with colours I’d only seen in my wildest dreams. But it was the tree at the center that held me captive. It was ancient, its trunk as wide as our village well, its branches reaching towards the sky like gnarled, loving arms. And it glowed. Not with the harsh glare of sunlight, but with a soft, warm, internal luminescence, a gentle pulse of light that made the air around it hum with a quiet energy. It was a light that felt as old as the earth, as kind as a lullaby, and as full of secrets as a whispered promise.

“Naomi,” Samuel breathed, his voice barely a murmur, laced with awe. “It’s… it’s beautiful.”
