The crimson dust swirled around Elara’s boots, a fine, powdery mist that clung to everything with an almost desperate tenacity. It coated the strange, gnarled plants that dotted the Martian landscape, settled on the shimmering hulls of the NASA rockets, and dusted the faces of the survivors with a perpetual ochre hue. For little Leo, however, it was just another part of this new, bewildering world. He’d been chasing a particularly iridescent beetle, its shell catching the weak sunlight like a scattered galaxy, when he’d seen it. He’d taken one step, then another, his small legs carrying him with a surprising burst of speed. The ripple had widened, swallowing the beetle, then his outstretched hand. A strange, exhilarating sensation, like being pulled through water, had washed over him. And then, he was somewhere else.

He called out, his voice thin and reedy, lost in the vast emptiness. “Mama? Papa?” Only the wind answered, a mournful sigh that whispered through the rocks.

He stood frozen for a moment, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird. He should go back. He knew he should go back. But the thought of that shimmering distortion, that strange doorway, filled him with a new kind of fear. What if it was still there? What if it took him again? And the distance… it seemed so immense, an insurmountable chasm. So instead of turning towards the settlement, towards the safety he desperately craved, he turned away. He ran.
