The crimson dust of Mars swirled around Kash’s boots, a stark contrast to the familiar, gritty brown of Earth’s soil. It was a new world, a fresh start, or so they told themselves. The domes shimmered under the alien sun, fragile bubbles of humanity clinging to the desolate landscape. He remembered the roar of the rockets, the guttural rumble of the planet below as it receded, a dying ember in the rearview of their escape. Earth. A place of golden arches and horrifying, mutated nourishment. A place of silence, of a city emptied by a single, glistening, nightmarish nugget.

He’d seen it again, in his dreams. The pulsing, emerald spine, the razor teeth, the unnervingly articulated limbs. The memory was a cold knot in his gut, a constant reminder of his role in the unfolding apocalypse. His research, his hubris, his accidental creation of the gargantuan lizard that had, for a fleeting, terrifying moment, seemed like salvation. Now, the lizard was a phantom, a guardian of a dead world, locked in an endless, silent war with the creature that had shattered their reality. He’d left it all behind, the screams, the fear, the desperate scramble for survival. But the fear, he was learning, was a tenacious stowaway.

“Kash?” A voice, softer than the Martian wind, broke through his reverie. Anya. Her eyes, the color of a stormy sea, held a familiar sadness, a shared understanding of the weight they carried. She held a small, intricately woven basket, its contents hidden beneath a swatch of salvaged fabric. “I thought I might find you here.”
