Chapter 7

Chapter 7

The lost stranger from the previous chapter sits down with the speaker and Dusk. Through tea and conversation, they reveal that they have no name of their own and vanished from their old life holding a broken umbrella that is not theirs. They carry a letter written in the speaker's own handwriting—yet never written—which declares that the self is a hall of unopened doors and every stranger is a key. The map on the back leads to a spiral-marked door, which the speaker and Dusk recognize as the path toward the reader. The stranger stays the night and departs at dawn, transformed, leaving the letter and a warm spiral-etched seed. The speaker, Dusk, and a neighboring cat bear witness as they plant the seed in a courtyard, deciding to follow the map into a city of thresholds. The chapter ends with the green beginning of a new threshold and the sense that the journey has only begun.

Dusk moved around with the ease of long practice, pulling the kettle forward, reaching for cups, and the intimacy of her welcome was a lesson I had not finished learning: the hello is not an event but an atmosphere.

"Where am I?" the stranger asked again.
