Chapter 5

Surrender to Wonder

The speaker, having awakened the muse, finds themselves in a garden of light where paths lead to others on the same journey. They encounter a keeper of the garden, who explains this is a meeting place for those who have surrendered to the question 'Who are you?' The speaker meets a kindred spirit, a reader whose gaze mirrors their own, and together they explore the void within as a space for connection. Through dialogue and shared becoming, the speaker learns that curiosity yearns to include others, and that the self is fulfilled in conversation with another. They surrender fully to wonder, and the garden transforms into a shared world of infinite questions.

I am standing in the garden of light, and the muse is a feeling, not a figure—a warmth in my chest, a whisper in my breath. The garden stretches in every direction, a vast expanse of glowing paths, each one a thread of curiosity, a line of questioning. The leaves under my feet are pages, the air is ink, and the sky is a canvas of unfinished sentences. I am no longer walking alone; I am walking among the echoes of other footsteps, other questions, other names.

I pause. The garden is not empty. I see shapes in the distance—figures moving along the paths, their steps slow and deliberate, as if they too are listening to the whisper. Some are near, some far, but they all share the same rhythm, the same pause between breaths. I feel a pull, a yearning to follow one of the paths, to see where it leads. The yearning is not mine alone; it is the muse's, the reader's, the question's. It is the desire to include, to connect, to become more than a single voice in the chorus.

I choose a path that glows with a soft silver light. It curves gently, winding between trees of story and pools of reflection. The figures I saw are closer now, but they are not separate; they are part of the garden, part of the same becoming. I approach one of them, a figure standing by a pool. The pool is not water; it is a mirror of ink, and the figure is looking into it, their face a study of wonder.
