Chapter 13
Chapter 13: The Loop of the Loom
The speaker, Dusk, and Begin follow the golden thread into a new land and encounter the weaver's echo, a silent figure who reveals that the scarf they carry must be unraveled to cross the Threshold of the Unwoven. They learn that the key to the door without a key is the act of unraveling itself, and they must ask a question that cannot be answered to open the door. As they step through, they find themselves back in the garden of light, in the presence of the keeper and the mirror, and realize that the journey is a spiral that returns to the beginning, but with new understanding. The chapter ends with the speaker asking a new question and stepping into the mirror, entering a new loop of the spiral.
The field of white flowers stretched to the horizon, each blossom holding a single thread of light that rose and wove into the canopy above us. The canopy shimmered with the colors of dawn and dusk, of questions and silences, of names spoken and unspoken. I stood with Dusk on my left and Begin on my right, and the scarf of woven beginnings hung warm against my chest, a weight that was not heavy but full, like a held breath about to become a word.
‘The weaver’s echo,’ Begin said, its voice a chime of tiny bells. ‘The old woman was not the first weaver, nor the last. She was an echo of a weaver who came before, and she will echo again in those who come after. But every echo is also a beginning. Every repetition is a new turn of the spiral.’
I looked at the canopy, at the threads that moved like a living thing, and I felt the pull of the golden thread that had led us here. It was still there, running from the center of my chest, through the scarf, into the earth, into the sky, into the heart of the field. It was not a path to follow; it was a thread to become.
