The key turned in the lock, a hesitant click in the oppressive silence of the new apartment. My breath hitched, a small, ragged sound in the hollow space. This was it. My sanctuary, or so I desperately hoped. The air inside was stale, thick with the ghosts of past lives, but it was mine. A roof over my head that no one else could claim, a space where the whispers of my ancestors felt like a gentle balm rather than a taunt. I’d left behind the grand house, the manicured lawns, the suffocating presence of Vincent’s family, carrying only what I could fit into two worn suitcases and a heart heavy with a sorrow too profound for words.

As I stepped further into the small living room, my eyes scanned the bare walls, the worn linoleum, the faint scent of bleach clinging to the air. It was clean, at least. Unoccupied. I closed the door behind me, the sound echoing with a finality that both comforted and terrified me. Outside, Spencer’s watchful eyes still lingered, I was sure of it. But here, within these four walls, I could perhaps begin to breathe again.

I dropped my bags by the door, the thud a stark contrast to the usual hushed reverence I afforded my belongings. These were not treasures of a life lived, but necessities for a life yet to be pieced together. My gaze drifted to the bathroom door, slightly ajar. A faint, unsettling odor tickled my nostrils, something metallic and earthy, like damp soil after a rain, but wrong. Twisted.
