The air in Spencer, West Virginia, had long since turned acrid with the venom spat by Vincent Metz and his kin. Yet, even as the shadows of their malice stretched, a different kind of fire ignited, one not born of their deliberate arson, but of retribution against Vincent himself. His life, a tapestry woven with threads of deceit, violence, and exploitation, had finally begun to unravel. President of a notorious 1% motorcycle club, Vincent’s dominion was built on the sale of drugs, women, and stolen goods, a sordid empire that left a trail of broken lives in its wake. He had raised at least two women, one a nurse in Reedy who bore him an illegitimate son twenty years before Any had her children with Grey Wolf. DNA had proven Grey Wolf was the biological father of Wesley, a fact Vincent had fought tooth and nail to deny. Vincent had hundreds of enemies, a testament to the countless wrongs he had inflicted. These were the very individuals who, years prior, had badly injured him, and these were the same souls now responsible for the inferno that consumed Vincents trailer.
The flames licked at the night sky, a hungry beast devouring dry timber and hope. Smoke, thick and black, billowed, carrying the scent of burning plastic and despair. Inside the inferno, Vincent Metz writhed, not from the immediate heat, but from the gnawing realization that his own transgressions had brought this wrath upon him. He had long believed himself untouchable, a king in his own twisted kingdom, protected by fear and the loyalty bought with intimidation. But fear, like any currency, could be devalued, and loyalty, when pushed too far, could curdle into outright hatred.
He had tried to pin it on Any, of course. The impulse was so ingrained, so habitual, that even as the trailer blazed, his mind latched onto her name, a desperate, futile attempt to deflect the consequences. He’d envisioned her, the Native woman he’d wronged so profoundly, dragged from her serene existence, accused of orchestrating this fiery vengeance. He’d even contacted the local authorities, his voice a strained rasp, painting a picture of a vengeful witch, a harbinger of doom. He knew, deep down, it was a lie, a pathetic echo of the lies he’d spread about her for years. He knew the hands that had set the blaze belonged to those he had systematically dismantled, those whose lives he had treated as disposable.
