The dust of Reedy Creek still clung to my boots, a gritty reminder of the betrayal that had festered there. But the shadows, it seemed, had a longer reach than I’d ever imagined. They stretched, tendrilled and grasping, all the way to Colt Ridge. It was a place I’d once associated with quiet hillsides and the scent of pine, a refuge I’d sought in my younger days, a canvas for dreams that now felt like faded watercolors. Now, it too was tainted, a landscape warped by the same venom that had poisoned Spencer and Reedy.
The air in Colt Ridge felt heavier, thick with unspoken accusations. It was here, in the hushed whispers of neighbors and the averted gazes of those who once offered a friendly nod, that I felt the full weight of their animosity. They didn't need to see the scorch marks on my soul; they could smell the lingering smoke of their own making.
I’d tried to build anew, to create a small pocket of peace on the outskirts of town, a place where my herbs could breathe and my crystals could hum their silent songs. My shop, once a vibrant hub on Main Street, was a ghost of itself, a memory I carried in the quiet corners of my heart. Here, in this borrowed space, I cultivated a different kind of garden, one of resilience, watered by the tears I refused to shed and fertilized by the truth I held within.
