Chapter 11
Whispers from Reedy Creek
The cruelty extends to surrounding towns like Reedy Creek. False accusations and persecution follow her, a relentless pursuit by those who wronged her.
The whispers, at first, were like the rustling of dry leaves skittering across a parched field. Insignificant, easily dismissed. But they grew, taking root in the damp soil of malice that seemed to saturate the very air around Spencer. They followed me, these insidious murmurs, clinging to my skirts like burrs, burrowing into the quiet corners of my soul. It wasn't enough that they had tried to dismantle my life within the confines of that suffocating town; their venomous reach extended, a dark tendril snaking out towards Reedy Creek, towards any place that might offer a sliver of solace.
I had sought refuge in the small cottage I’d managed to secure on the outskirts of Reedy Creek, a place that felt a world away from the judgment and the venom. The creek itself, a gentle ribbon of water, murmured its own secrets, a soothing counterpoint to the harsh realities I’d fled. The air here was cleaner, the trees stood taller, and for a brief, precious time, I felt a fragile peace begin to bloom within me. I filled my days tending to my herbs, their familiar scents a balm to my frayed nerves. I’d sit by the creek, letting its steady flow wash over me, meditating, feeling the pulse of the earth beneath my bare feet, drawing strength from the ancient wisdom humming in my veins.
But peace, I was learning, was a luxury I was not yet permitted. The whispers found me there, carried on the wind that snaked through the hollows and over the hills. They spoke of my past, twisting truths into grotesque parodies. They painted me as something I was not, a serpent in the garden, a purveyor of dark magic, a woman with a heart as black as the raven they’d so cruelly placed in my toilet. The same voices that had accused me of stealing Vincent’s child, of being a witch who conjured misfortune, now whispered that I was a danger, a flighty woman who had abandoned her responsibilities, a seductress who charmed men with false promises.
