Chapter 1
Whispers of the Ancestors
Born with gifts, adopted into a world of feuds. The young woman's Native American heritage is her strength, a secret whispered by ancestors, unaware of the shadow of Spencer, WV.
The breath of the mountains was my first lullaby, a gentle caress against my skin that held the secrets of ages. Even before the ink dried on adoption papers, before the scent of pine and damp earth was replaced by the sterile air of a hospital room, I felt them. Whispers. Not the kind that slithered from jealous tongues or malicious hearts, but the ancient murmurings of my ancestors, weaving through the very fabric of my being. They spoke of healing, of drawing power from the moon’s silver tears, of seeing beyond the veil of the ordinary. They were a legacy, a birthright, a quiet hum beneath the surface of a life yet unwritten.
My adoptive parents, their names a gentle breeze, their love a warm embrace, were related on the maternal side to the McCoys. But even in their kindness, a shadow lurked, a faint echo of a feud that had clawed its way into legend. The Hatfields. The name itself was a low growl, a reminder of a world I was yet to understand, a world that would soon seek to claim me. They brought me to West Virginia, to a place called Spencer, a name that would later taste like ash in my mouth. It was a town that seemed to hold its breath, waiting, always waiting, for something dark to unfurl.
And then there were the others. The Metz, the Harpers, the Starchers. My husband’s families. They were a tapestry woven with threads of immense wealth and suffocating pride. From the moment I entered their orbit, I felt their scrutiny, sharp and cold. They saw a girl, adopted, yes, but one who carried an unquantifiable essence, a connection to something they couldn't comprehend, something that threatened their carefully constructed world. They began to spin their webs of deceit, their words sharp as shards of glass, aimed at the heart of my perceived difference. My heritage, the very source of my strength, was twisted into a weapon, used to wound and isolate. The court records would later bear witness to their machinations, the proof of their lies etched in legal ink. This book is written and dedicated to the memory of Wesley Aaron Metz. May he rest in peace.
