The air in the sacred grove was thick, not with the familiar dampness of the endless rain, but with a charged, expectant stillness. Brother Theron stood before the moss-covered altar, his frail hands trembling slightly as he unrolled the brittle parchment. The ink, faded by centuries, still held a spectral glow under the dim, filtered light that managed to pierce the perpetual gloom. His heart, a frantic bird against his ribs, beat a rhythm of both trepidation and an almost unbearable hope. He had deciphered the fragmented verses, pieced together the forgotten gestures, and now, the moment of truth had arrived.

He remembered the chilling pronouncements of Old Man Hemlock, the village elder, his voice a rasp of ingrained fear. "Tampering with what the sky has decreed is folly, Brother. It is a balance we do not understand, a sorrow we must endure." Hemlock's words, steeped in the collective dread of generations, had always been a potent counterpoint to Theron's own quiet suspicions. But the whispers, the spectral shimmer he had once glimpsed, and the fragmented prophecies unearthed from the monastery’s deepest vaults, had spoken a different truth. They spoke of a forgotten pact, a guardian wronged, and a sorrow that had festered into a deluge.

Theron began to chant, his voice, usually a soft murmur, resonating with a power he hadn't known he possessed. The words were archaic, alien even to his own ears, yet they flowed from him as if etched into his very soul. He traced the symbols on the altar with his finger, each movement precise, deliberate, a dance with the unseen. The parchment crackled, the ancient ink seeming to pulse with a faint, inner light. As he spoke the final syllable, a tremor ran through the earth, a deep, resonant hum that vibrated through his bones.
