Chapter 17
Confronting the Queenie
The Molly Queenie finally reveals itself, not as a monster, but as a sorrowful, powerful entity. It communicates its purpose – a desperate attempt to preserve something lost.
The flickering television screen cast a pale blue light across the faces of Paul, Lilly, and Kevin, their breath pluming in the frigid air of the watchtower. Outside, the world was a canvas of white, the snow muffling every sound, creating an eerie, hushed silence that had become their constant companion. The news anchor’s voice, usually a steady drone of local events, crackled with an unfamiliar urgency. “—reports continue to flood in from across the continent. The… anomalies, as they are being termed, are spreading. Children, displaying… altered behaviors, a primal hunger. Authorities are urging citizens to remain indoors, to secure all points of entry.”
Images flashed across the screen. A blurry photograph, taken in haste no doubt, showed a cluster of figures darting through a desolate, snow-covered landscape. They moved on all fours, their limbs unnaturally long and sharp, their heads oddly triangular, set with what looked like too many vacant, hungry eyes. The anchor’s voice lowered, a hushed reverence creeping in. “Witnesses describe a terrifying efficiency. The creatures, for lack of a better term, incapacitate their prey with swift, brutal precision, often multiple stabs before… before the gruesome act of internal consumption begins. And then there are the vines.”
The screen shifted to a close-up of a vine, impossibly vivid against the stark white. It pulsed with a deep, unsettling crimson, interwoven with veins of a sickly pink. It snaked across a barren tree branch, its tendrils curling with an unnatural life. “These… botanical growths,” the anchor continued, his voice strained, “have been sighted in every affected region. They are aggressive, rapidly spreading, and dangerously toxic to the touch. Attempts to remove them have resulted in severe burns and… other, more disturbing reactions.”
