Chapter 14
The Hidden Grove
Following Kevin's guidance, they discover a secluded grove, untouched by the vines. It offers a temporary sanctuary, but also a place of unsettling stillness.
The television screen flickered, casting a pale, wavering light across the faces of Paul, Lilly, and Kevin. The news anchor, a woman whose practiced calm was beginning to fray at the edges, spoke of the growing unrest, the inexplicable transformations. Her words, usually a familiar drone against the backdrop of their isolated existence, now carried a sharper edge of fear.
"Reports continue to flood in," she stated, her voice tight, "of disturbing changes in children across the globe. The news reporter’s voice quavered as she described its hunting method. "Witnesses describe a brutal efficiency. The creature immobilizes its prey, stabbing it multiple times with its razor-sharp limbs before… before entering the victim's chest cavity. It is believed to consume the flesh from within, and in some cases, to exert a form of control over the host."
