The air in the hidden passage was thick with the scent of old paper and forgotten things, a perfume Clara had come to recognize as the breath of history. Each step down the narrow, unseen staircase was a deliberate act, a gentle press of her worn boot sole against wood that had known so few visitors. Dust motes, disturbed by her entry, began to dance in the single, focused beam of light, tiny constellations swirling in the otherwise still air. The walls were lined with dark, polished wood, the same rich mahogany that graced the main rooms of the house, but here it felt more intimate, more personal. The floor was a simple, dark wood, worn smooth in places by years, perhaps decades, of solitary footsteps.
