Chapter 5
The Whistle's Power
Facing the sorcerer's magic, Osaze remembers the old woman's gift. He blows the ivory whistle, unleashing a powerful sound that shatters the magical vines and weakens the sorcerer's hold.
The air in the cave was thick with the scent of damp earth and something else, something acrid and ancient that clung to the back of Osaze's throat. Before him, the sorcerer stood, a gaunt figure draped in robes the colour of a bruised twilight. His eyes, like chips of obsidian, gleamed with a chilling amusement, and a cruel smile stretched his thin lips. The magical gate of shining vines pulsed with an eerie luminescence, each tendril vibrating with contained power, holding Princess Ewere captive within its shimmering embrace. She stood tall, her face pale but resolute, her gaze fixed not on the sorcerer, but on the small hunter who had dared to trespass into his domain.
"You," the sorcerer spat, his voice a dry rustle like dead leaves. "A peasant with a bow and a stick. Do you truly believe you can stand against me? Against my magic, which has held this princess captive and will soon make her mine, and through her, this kingdom?" He gestured with a long, bony finger towards the pulsating vines. "These are not mere plants, hunter. They are woven from the very essence of power, bound by spells older than your lineage. They will crush you like a fly caught in a spider's web."
Osaze’s heart hammered against his ribs, a frantic drumbeat in the suffocating silence. The sorcerer’s words, laced with arrogance and the palpable hum of dark energy, were meant to sow fear, and a tremor of it did run through him. He saw the strength of the vines, the unnatural glow that spoke of forces beyond his understanding. He was a hunter, skilled in the ways of the forest, but this was no beast of fur and claw. This was a sorcerer, wielding powers that defied the natural order. He saw the flicker of desperation in the princess’s eyes, the slight tremble of her chin, and a surge of righteous anger washed over him, eclipsing the fear. He remembered the old woman, her serene smile, her cryptic words: "Only a brave heart, not a sharp sword, can find the princess."
