Chapter 9
Cat's Hidden Library
Cat reveals her secret collection of forbidden medical texts. Within their aged pages, we find obscure references to cellular anomalies that echo our patient’s condition, hinting at a forgotten science.
The sterile blue of the surgical gowns seemed to absorb the very air, leaving only the sharp, metallic tang of antiseptic and the rhythmic beep of the heart monitor. My gloved hands, clad in cool, sterile green, moved with a practiced grace that belied the tremor in my gut. The laparoscope, a slender grey snake, relayed a magnified, often unflattering, image of the internal landscape onto the overhead screen. Blood, a rich, visceral red, pulsed sluggishly in the confined space. We were deep within the delicate architecture of a uterus, a place I knew better than my own bedroom. My team, a constellation of focused faces beneath sterile blue caps, moved in silent concert. Juni, her brow furrowed in concentration, suctioned away excess fluid with unwavering precision. Cat, her eyes scanning the monitors with an almost maternal gaze, kept a steady watch on our patient’s vital signs. And Charlie, her nimble fingers already preparing the next set of instruments, radiated an eager anticipation, a stark contrast to the grave atmosphere that had descended upon the room.
“Suction, please, Juni,” I murmured, my voice a low, even tone that I’d honed over countless hours of practice. The whir of the suction tip filled the momentary silence, clearing the field of view. The anomaly was subtle, a discoloration, a slight thickening of the uterine wall that wasn’t charted in any of the holographic textbooks, nor etched into the surgical simulations that had been my constant companions since I was ten. It wasn’t supposed to be there. Nothing about this patient’s presentation had been textbook. A routine hysteroscopy for suspected fibroids had spiraled into this complex exploration, and now, something else entirely.
“Zoey, her pressure is dipping,” Cat’s voice, usually a soft balm, held a new edge of concern. The numbers on the screen flickered, a stark red warning against the cool blue backdrop.
