Chapter 7
Chapter 7: Natalie's Observation
Natalie, often absorbed in her own world of television, begins to notice Lavina's increasing distress and preoccupation. Her younger sister, in her typically blunt way, mentions seeing fleeting shadows at the periphery of her vision and hearing strange thudding sounds during the night. These seemingly innocent observations, delivered with a child's directness, add another layer to Lavina's growing unease. Natalie’s awareness of the disturbances suggests that the supernatural phenomena are not solely confined to Lavina's individual experience, hinting that the encroaching darkness might be affecting the entire household.
Natalie’s world was a kaleidoscope of flashing colors and catchy jingles, a vibrant tapestry woven from the countless hours she spent glued to the television screen. Her small frame, usually a whirlwind of restless energy, would often settle into a near-catatonic state when a particularly absorbing program captured her attention. Lavina, meanwhile, moved through the house like a phantom, her steps hushed, her presence a constant, low hum of anxiety. She’d learned to navigate the domestic landscape with a practiced quietness, a skill honed by years of anticipating her mother’s volatile moods and her sister’s unpredictable demands.
Today, however, Natalie’s gaze seemed to drift from the animated characters on the screen. Her small brow furrowed, her lower lip jutting out in a familiar pout. She’d been watching Lavina for a while, her head tilted, her eyes, usually fixed on the glowing rectangle, now darting towards her older sister. Lavina, perched on the edge of the worn sofa, traced the intricate patterns of a faded rug with her finger, her mind a million miles away, lost in the labyrinth of her own anxieties. The lingering scent of bleach from her frantic cleaning session the night before still clung to the air, a sterile counterpoint to the underlying mustiness of the old house.
“You’re doing that thing again,” Natalie announced, her voice cutting through the artificial cheer of the cartoon.
