Chapter 5
Chapter 5: A Mother's Cruelty
Camilla returns, her presence immediately casting a pall over the house. She is dismissive of Lavina's efforts and critical of her appearance, her words sharp and laced with manipulation. Camilla's contempt is a familiar sting, reinforcing Lavina's feelings of inadequacy and fueling her deep-seated desire to escape the suffocating environment her mother has created. The encounter leaves Lavina feeling dejected but also strengthens her resolve to break free from her mother's oppressive control and the unhealthy dynamics of their home life. The stark contrast between Camilla's self-absorption and Lavina's yearning for a better life becomes more pronounced.
Camilla’s car, a garish red convertible that always seemed too loud for the quiet street, screeched to a halt outside the house. It was the sound of her mother, and it always meant trouble.
“She’s back,” Lavina murmured, a knot tightening in her stomach. Natalie, oblivious, continued to scribble aimlessly on a piece of paper, her tongue poking out in concentration.
“Did you finish cleaning like I told you to?” Camilla’s voice, sharp as broken glass, cut through the air before she even reached the front door. Lavina could hear the stiletto heels clicking on the porch, each step a punctuation mark of impatience.
