Chapter 10
Chapter 10: The Threshold
Lavina stumbles upon a hidden entrance, ancient and overgrown with moss and vines – the undeniable beginning of the labyrinth. Standing sentinel at the threshold is the Minotaur, his gaze fixed upon her, intense and unwavering. He is not there to bar her way, but to ensure she enters, a silent guardian of the path ahead. Her journey, the true chase, is about to begin. The labyrinth represents a profound descent into the unknown, a trial from which she may emerge transformed or be lost forever.
The air in the overgrown back garden was thick with the scent of damp earth and forgotten things. Lavina hadn't ventured this far back in years, not since her father had been alive, when this corner of the property had been a wild, untamed haven for him. Now, it was a testament to neglect, a tangle of blackberry brambles and ivy that had long since claimed dominion over the crumbling stone wall. She’d been drawn here by a recurring whisper in her mind, a quiet insistent tug that had grown stronger with each passing day since her encounter with… him. The creature of her nightmare, the one whose image was now permanently etched behind her eyes, had also left an indelible mark on her reality, a phantom scratch on the floorboards and an unsettling scent that still sometimes, when the wind was just right, seemed to drift from the hallway.
She pushed aside a curtain of thick, velvety moss that clung to the stones, her fingers brushing against something rough and unyielding beneath. It wasn't just the wall. Her heart gave a peculiar lurch, a mix of dread and a strange, burgeoning excitement. She pulled harder, the moss tearing away to reveal a dark, gaping aperture in the stone. It was an entrance, ancient and choked with the very life that had consumed the rest of the garden. Vines, thick as a man's arm, snaked across it, their leaves a deep, glossy green, shimmering with dew even in the weak afternoon sun. The air that seeped from the opening was cool, carrying a faint, earthy perfume, not entirely unlike the scent Natalie had noticed, but deeper, older.
This was it. The maze. The labyrinth. The word settled in her mind with a weighty finality. It wasn't just a metaphor for her own internal struggles anymore. It was a physical place, a tangible manifestation of the path she was somehow compelled to tread. And standing there, a silent, imposing silhouette against the shadowed opening, was him.
