Harrison’s breath hitched, a ragged sound in the suffocating quiet of his room. The air hung heavy, thick with the cloying scent of cheap air freshener and something else, something metallic and faintly sweet, like overripe fruit. He traced the rim of the empty glass on his nightstand, the condensation leaving a faint, ghostly ring. Nikki. Her name was a constant hum beneath his thoughts, a siren song pulling him further into the abyss.

It had been weeks since the funeral, weeks since he’d seen her, truly seen her, at the funeral. A beautiful, impossible vision, rising from the very earth that was supposed to claim her. The shock had rippled through the mourners, a collective gasp that had mirrored the one trapped in his own chest. He remembered the frantic whispers, the wide, disbelieving eyes. And then, the unsettling stillness that had followed, as if the world itself had paused to acknowledge the anomaly.

His own actions, a blur of desperate desperation and misguided rage, replayed in his mind. The burning house, a pyre of his own making, a desperate attempt to erase the pain of Jennifer’s departure, to reclaim something, anything, that felt like his. Nikki, a fleeting image of survival, vanishing into the darkness, her life, he’d believed, snatched from the jaws of his own destruction. But she hadn’t vanished. Not really.
