The air thrummed with an expectant energy, a low hum that resonated in Kwon’s chest. Beside him, James bounced on the balls of his feet, his gaze fixed on the bruised twilight sky. “Almost time, man,” he breathed, his voice laced with a giddy excitement that Kwon found infectious. The annual Blood Moon festival, or ‘Blood Night’ as they’d affectionately nicknamed it, was more than just a local tradition; it was a night of shared anticipation, a communal shedding of the ordinary. Every year, in late September, the moon bled red, painting the world in an unsettling, beautiful hue. This year, it felt particularly potent, the whispers of the supernatural hanging heavy in the late summer air.

They stood by the edge of Blackwood Lake, the water a dark, inky mirror reflecting the deepening purples and oranges of the horizon. A few other figures dotted the shoreline, their hushed conversations and nervous laughter weaving into the growing stillness. Kwon had always found a strange solace in these nights, a feeling of being on the precipice of something ancient and powerful. James, on the other hand, was all raw, unfiltered enthusiasm, his energy a wildfire that threatened to consume their quiet surroundings.

“Think it’ll be as good as last year?” James asked, nudging Kwon with his elbow. “Remember that couple who got engaged under the glow? Totally romantic.”
