The sweet scent of blooming jasmine, usually a harbinger of spring’s gentle embrace, now felt cloying, a stark contrast to the metallic tang of dread that permeated the very stones beneath their feet. Amani stood at the forefront, the amulet nestled in her pocket, a comforting weight against her thigh, its subtle pulse a constant reminder of the power that thrummed beneath her skin. Beside her, Mihail was a bulwark of strength, his dark hair whipped by the restless spring breeze, his piercing blue eyes fixed on the encroaching shadows that writhed at the edge of the square.

“You can do this, Amani,” Mihail's voice was a low rumble, a steady anchor in the rising tide of her anxiety. “Trust in what you’ve learned.” His hand rested on her shoulder, a familiar warmth that chased away some of the chill that had settled deep within her.

But doubt, a serpent with a thousand tongues, still coiled within her heart. She turned her gaze towards the figure emerging from the gloom, a figure that radiated an aura of pure malevolence. Vladislaus, the vampire lord whispered about in hushed tones by the village elders, now stood before them, an arrogant smirk playing on his lips. His presence seemed to suck the very light from the fading afternoon, casting long, distorted shadows that danced like specters.
