The silence that descended upon Eldergrove was a heavy blanket, muffling the usual symphony of spring. Jasmine still bloomed, its sweet perfume a stark contrast to the lingering scent of ash and something metallic, something that spoke of spilled blood. Amani lay still, her breath shallow, the warmth of Mihail’s arms a fragile shield against the encroaching chill of death. The amulet, nestled against her skin, pulsed with a faint, fading light. It had given its all, a final, brilliant flare that had scattered Vladislaus and his minions, but the cost… the cost was etched in the pain that wracked her body.
Mihail held her close, his rough hands surprisingly gentle as he cradled her. Tears streamed down his chiseled face, carving paths through the grime and sweat of battle. “Amani,” he whispered, his voice raw with grief, “you saved us. You saved them all.” He pressed a kiss to her forehead, his touch a desperate plea for her to hold on.
She managed a weak smile, her vision swimming. “Did… did he leave?” Her voice was a mere breath, a fragile thread of sound.
