The world swam back into focus, a dizzying kaleidoscope of fading light and desperate cries. Amani gasped, a ragged sound torn from her throat, the burning in her side a searing testament to Vladislaus’s treachery. Mihail’s face loomed above her, his usually stoic expression etched with a pain that mirrored her own. His arms, strong and steady, cradled her as if she were made of spun glass. The amulet, still clutched in her hand, pulsed with a faint, fading warmth.

“Amani?” Mihail’s voice was a rough whisper, laced with a raw desperation that terrified her more than the wound itself. “Stay with me. You have to stay with me.” Tears, hot and unbidden, traced paths through the grime on his cheeks. He was crying. Mihail, the stoic warrior, was crying. It was a sight that struck Amani more profoundly than the physical agony.

The villagers, their faces a mask of horror and disbelief, had momentarily ceased their desperate fight. Vladislaus, his fangs still bared in a triumphant sneer, had recoiled from Amani’s final, blinding burst of light, his dark minions scattering like startled crows. But now, their attention was fixed on Amani, their protector, their beacon, bleeding onto the very earth she had sworn to defend.
