Chapter 12
Night of the New Moon
The night of the new moon approaches, the prophesied time for the bloom's full power. The village is on edge, the shadowy figure's presence more palpable than ever. Elara knows time is running out.
The air in Oakhaven grew heavy with the approach of the new moon. It was a stillness that pressed in, not of peace, but of a held breath, a collective anxiety that had settled over the village like a shroud. Even the wind seemed to falter in its usual playful dance through the ancient oaks, its whispers now carrying a mournful, foreboding tone. The villagers moved with a new caution, their eyes darting to the deepening shadows, their conversations hushed, as if the very act of speaking too loudly might draw unwanted attention.
Elara felt it too, a prickling unease that crawled beneath her skin. The days had bled into one another, each dawn bringing a flicker of hope, each dusk a fresh wave of dread. Elder Maeve had been more withdrawn than usual, her gaze distant, her pronouncements even more cryptic. Kael, ever watchful, shadowed Elara with a worried intensity, his usual jovial spirit dimmed by the pervasive fear. He’d taken to checking the latches on their small cottage door more frequently, his hand resting on the hilt of the sturdy hunting knife he always carried.
Tonight was the night. The night of the new moon. The night the prophecy spoke of, when the Midnight Bloom, in its full, potent glory, was said to reveal its secrets. But the prophecy also spoke of a darkness that would seek to consume the light, a creeping dread that had already begun to manifest. The shadowy figure, once a fleeting terror, now felt like a constant, unseen presence. Its chilling touch had been felt more directly in recent nights – a sudden frost on windows in the height of summer, livestock found inexplicably panicked and scattered, a persistent, unnatural silence in the woods bordering the village.
