The weight of doubt settled upon Elara like a shroud, heavier than the starless sky that pressed down on the village. Each tick of the grandfather clock in the hall seemed to hammer another nail into the coffin of her confidence. Was she truly the one? The prophecy spoke of a chosen hand, a pure heart, but Elara felt neither. She felt the gnawing fear of a child caught in a storm, the cold dread of the unknown.

She traced the intricate patterns on the wooden table, the same patterns her grandmother’s hands had woven into tapestries, patterns that now seemed to mock her with their enduring strength. Elder Maeve’s words echoed in her mind, a gentle cascade of encouragement that now felt like a distant memory, drowned out by the rising tide of her own anxieties. Every creak of the floorboards, every rustle of leaves against the windowpane, sent a jolt of apprehension through her. She imagined the shadowy figure lurking just beyond the flickering lamplight, a silent observer of her turmoil.
