The air in the alley was thick, a syrupy brew of stale urine and something metallic, like a forgotten penny left to rust. It clung to the back of my throat, a constant, unwelcome guest. Tabatha, my Muse, my anchor, my everything, shivered beside me, her usual fire banked to a low ember. The neon glow from the street bled into the grime, painting everything in shades of bruised purple and sickly green. We were adrift, two tiny boats on a sea of despair, and the tide was pulling us further out.
Then, a flicker. Not of hope, not yet, but of something else. A presence. He emerged from the deeper shadows like a glitch in reality, a silhouette against the faded brick. He was a chameleon, his form shifting with the light, never quite settling into a distinct shape. Brian, they called him. The Shadow Dealer. He moved with a liquid grace that belied the hard edges of his world. His voice, when it came, was a low hum, a siren song promising oblivion.
“Lost souls,” he rasped, his words slithering through the damp air. His eyes, hidden beneath the brim of a perpetually tilted cap, seemed to pierce through the grime and into the hollow spaces within us. “Looking for a way out, or a way deeper in?”
