The air, once a thick, syrupy miasma of despair, began to thin. Not like a gentle breeze, but like a desperate gasp for breath after being held under too long. We’d navigated the churning vortex, the dizzying highs and the soul-shattering lows, and somehow, miraculously, we hadn’t been entirely consumed. We were tattered, frayed at the edges like a beloved, over-worn blanket, but we were still *us*. This wasn’t some grand, orchestrated escape; it was a slow, sputtering emergence, like a faulty engine finally catching. Laughter, the kind that bubbles up from the deepest well of absurdity, became our armor. It was a defiant shield against the memories that clawed at our heels, a way to slap away the phantom whispers of the Shadow Dealer and the echoing hollowness of empty pockets.
“Can you believe,” Tabatha rasped, her voice still rough from nights spent inhaling anything that promised oblivion, “that we actually *survived* that?” She nudged me with her shoulder, a gesture so familiar it ached. We were perched on a graffiti-scarred bench, the California sun, usually a benevolent golden god, feeling more like a judgmental spotlight.
I snorted, a dry, rattling sound. “Survived? Honey, we *thrived* in the wreckage. We were the queens of the dumpster dive, the mavens of the meth-fueled midnight market. We practically invented ‘survival chic’.” My own laughter was a little too loud, a little too brittle, but it was there.
