The pavement was a cold, unforgiving mattress, the stars indifferent glitter on a canvas of perpetual night. Dawn, when it finally bled across the horizon, wasn't a gentle awakening but a harsh, fluorescent interrogation. It found us huddled in the alcove of a closed-down laundromat, the smell of stale detergent and desperation clinging to us like a second skin. The methacoaster had deposited us here, a deposit of broken dreams and hollowed-out selves. We’d ridden it hard, a blur of neon highs and crushing lows, and now the silence was deafening, punctuated only by the gnawing emptiness in our bellies and the phantom thrum of speed in our veins.

Tiffany, her muscular frame curled against me, stirred. Her breath ghosted my cheek, a whisper of warmth in the encroaching chill. Her eyes, usually sharp and full of a defiant wit, were clouded, heavy with the unspoken weight of everything we’d seen, everything we’d done. “Another day, huh?” she murmured, her voice raspy.

I managed a weak smile, pulling her closer. “Another day to conquer, Muse. Or at least, to survive.” The words felt hollow, a tired echo of the bravance we’d once possessed. The methacoaster had a way of stripping you bare, leaving you with only the raw, exposed nerves of your being. The thrill of the ride had long since dissolved, replaced by a gnawing ache, a phantom limb that still twitched with the memory of what was lost.
