The sun, a bruised and indifferent eye, bled across the concrete horizon. Another dawn, another day to outwit the gnawing emptiness. The alley, our temporary kingdom, reeked of yesterday’s despair and the metallic tang of… something. Tabatha stirred beside me, a sigh escaping her lips like a trapped bird. Her hair, usually a fiery cascade, was matted against her cheek, a testament to our shared slumber on a bed of discarded cardboard. My arm, strong and scarred, tightened around her, a silent promise in the face of this relentless, soul-crushing reality. We were two ships adrift in a sea of broken glass and forgotten dreams, clinging to each other like barnacles to a sinking hull.

“Morning, my muse,” I whispered, my voice raspy from the night’s chill and the dust that coated my throat.

She mumbled something unintelligible, burrowing deeper into my embrace. I understood. The world outside this small pocket of warmth was a ravenous beast, and for now, we were its only defense. The city, California in all its glittering, hollow glory, felt like a cruel joke. We’d chased a mirage, a shimmering promise of a better life, only to find ourselves staring into the abyss.
