The first breath of dawn wasn't a gentle caress, but a slap across the face, cold and unforgiving. It seeped through the threadbare blanket, a constant reminder of the concrete bed and the sky for a ceiling. We were no longer dreamers, no longer artists sketching futures on napkins. We were grit and gnawing hunger, the hum of the city a distant, mocking symphony. Each sunrise was a victory, a brutal, bloody one, painted in shades of grey and the metallic tang of desperation.

"Another day, huh?" Tabatha’s voice was a rough whisper, still laced with sleep and something else, something I couldn't quite name. It was a fear that mirrored my own, a silent acknowledgment of the precipice we teetered on.

I squeezed her hand, my calloused fingers finding hers, a familiar anchor in the swirling chaos. "Another day to not be dead. That's a win, right?" My attempt at humor felt brittle, a paper-thin shield against the gnawing anxiety.
