Chapter 6
The Seagull's Secret
Lily befriends a seagull, sharing her snacks. Sarah smiles, amused by her daughter's ability to connect with nature, but keeps a watchful eye on the unpredictable sea nearby.
The salt spray kissed Lily’s cheeks, a familiar greeting from the sea. She’d barely kicked off her sandals before her mermaid swimsuit, shimmering with scales of turquoise and lavender, was already on. Her heart-shaped sunglasses, a perfect match for her own joyful gaze, perched on her nose. “Mommy, look!” she squealed, holding up a perfect, unbroken seashell. Sarah, unpacking the last of the beach towels, smiled. Lily’s exuberance was like a tide itself, always pulling her into the heart of summer.
Today, however, Lily’s attention was captured by a different kind of creature. A lone seagull, bold and curious, hopped closer, its beady eyes fixed on the small bag of crackers Lily had brought. “He’s hungry, Mommy,” Lily whispered, her voice filled with a child’s earnest empathy. She broke off a tiny piece of cracker and offered it on her outstretched palm. The seagull, after a moment of hesitation, darted forward, snatched the morsel, and retreated a few steps. It repeated this dance, a delicate negotiation between girl and bird, until the bag was nearly empty.
Sarah watched, a warmth spreading through her chest. Lily’s ability to connect with the world around her, to see life in a discarded shell or a hungry seagull, was a gift. She loved seeing her daughter so at ease, so utterly present in the moment. Yet, even as her heart swelled with pride and affection, a small knot of anxiety tightened in her stomach. The sea, so beautiful and inviting, was also a powerful, unpredictable force. Its vastness was a constant reminder of how easily a small, spirited girl could be swallowed by its immensity. She scanned the horizon, the endless stretch of blue and white, and pulled Lily a little closer.
