Sarah keeps a close eye on Lily as she explores rock pools. A moment of distraction, a fleeting shadow of worry crosses Sarah's face, her protective instincts always on high alert.
Sarah settled onto the worn beach blanket, the familiar scent of salt and sun-warmed sand filling her lungs. Beside her, Lily, a blur of shimmering scales and bright pink, was already halfway to the water's edge. Her mermaid swimsuit, a gift from Grandma that Lily insisted was woven from actual sea magic, gleamed under the morning sun. Perched atop her sunny blonde curls, her heart-shaped sunglasses, a recent acquisition, made the world appear in a rosy, dreamlike hue. Sarah’s heart gave a familiar, gentle squeeze. This was it. Their annual pilgrimage to the sea, a ritual etched into the very fabric of their lives.
Lily, with her boundless energy and an imagination that outpaced even the swiftest seagull, was a creature of pure joy. She’d spent the last hour meticulously arranging seashells into what she declared a “royal palace for the sea king,” her brow furrowed in concentration, her little tongue peeking out from the corner of her mouth. Now, the allure of the tide pools had captured her attention.
“Mama, look!” Lily called, her voice a high, clear chime carried on the breeze. She was already kneeling by a cluster of dark, barnacle-encrusted rocks, her tiny fingers probing the miniature aquatic world. Sarah watched, a soft smile playing on her lips, but her gaze never strayed far. Her protectiveness, a constant hum beneath the surface of her love, was a well-worn habit, as natural as breathing.
