The wind whipped Sarah’s hair across her face, each gust a cruel whisper of ‘gone, gone, gone.’ Her lungs burned, a raw ache mirroring the terror that clawed at her throat. The beach, moments ago a vibrant canvas of sun-drenched joy, had transformed into a vast, indifferent expanse. Lily. Her Lily. The heart-shaped sunglasses, the shimmering tail of her swimsuit – they were a beacon of her daughter’s spirit, a spirit that had, for the first time, led her too far away. Sarah’s voice, hoarse from calling, cracked with each desperate plea, her eyes scanning every distant figure, every shadowed dune. The playful squeals of other children, once a comforting sound, now seemed to mock her with their carefree abandon. Had she not been watching? Had she let her own brief moment of distraction, a glance at a particularly striking shell, be the catalyst for this nightmare? The image of Lily, so small and utterly absorbed in her world, flashed behind Sarah’s eyes, intensifying the panic. She stumbled, her feet sinking into the yielding sand, a sob catching in her chest. The sea, usually her sanctuary, now felt like a hungry maw, its rhythmic roar a taunt. Every shadow seemed to shift, every ripple of water a false hope. The world had shrunk to the single, agonizing point of Lily’s absence.

Just as a wave of utter despair threatened to pull her under, a gruff, yet steady voice cut through the wind’s howl. “Lost something, have we, lass?”

Sarah’s head snapped up. Standing a few yards away, mending a fishing net with practiced, weathered hands, was an old man. His face was a roadmap of sun-baked wrinkles, his eyes the clear, piercing blue of the ocean on a calm day. He wore a thick, salt-stained jumper, and his beard, a silvery white, seemed to catch the sunlight. He was Old Man Hemlock, a fixture of this coastline, known for his quiet ways and an almost uncanny understanding of the sea.
