The descent into Mercury’s atmosphere was a symphony of controlled chaos. Alarms, once shrill and insistent, had softened into a low hum, a testament to the *Odyssey’s* resilience. Deagan felt it in his bones, a familiar vibration that spoke of engines straining against forces barely understood. He had left Mars, a world of rust-colored silence, for this, the closest planet to the sun. The journey had been a blur of stark beauty and gnawing unease. Vast nebulae had painted the void with impossible colors, and the silence between stars had been punctuated by the unnerving sensation of being observed. He’d dismissed it as stress, the psychological toll of isolation, but the feeling persisted, a prickle on his skin that no amount of environmental control could dispel.

Now, as the *Odyssey* broke through the shimmering haze, a different silence descended. Not the vacuum of space, but a pregnant pause, as if the very planet held its breath. The visual feed flickered, then stabilized, revealing a landscape that defied all known astronomical data. This was not the scorched, cratered wasteland of textbooks. Instead, a tapestry of swirling, iridescent clouds cascaded down mountains that seemed to drink the sunlight. Canyons, etched with impossible precision, glowed with an inner luminescence, and the air, if it could be called that, shimmered with an energy Deagan had never encountered. It was breathtaking. And terrifying.

“Mission Control, this is Deagan. I’m on approach. Visuals are… unexpected.” His voice, usually steady, held a tremor. He waited for Eva Rostova’s measured response, the familiar cadence of Earth’s distant bureaucracy. But there was only static. A thick, impenetrable wall of it. He tried again, cycling through emergency frequencies, his heart beginning to pound a frantic rhythm against his ribs. Nothing. It was as if Mercury had swallowed their communication entirely.
