Chapter 6
Whispers in the Dark
As Deagan approaches Mercury, the 'chill' returns, accompanied by fleeting visions. He feels a presence, ancient and vast, communicating in ways beyond his understanding.
The crimson plains of Mars, once a canvas of stark beauty and profound solitude, had receded into a dull smudge against the velvet of space. Deagan’s ship, the *Odyssey*, sliced through the void, a lone metallic seed hurtling towards a sun-scorched destination. Yet, the silence within the cockpit was no longer a comforting blanket of mission focus. It was a charged stillness, heavy with the unspoken, the unknown. The ‘chill’ had returned, not as a sudden, sharp intake of breath, but as a creeping tendril of unease that coiled around his very bones. It was a sensation that defied the controlled climate of his vessel, a phantom cold born not of external temperature, but of an internal disturbance.

Shimmering geometric patterns, impossibly intricate, danced like motes of dust in sunlight, only these were born of starlight and something far older. Then, darkness. Not the void of space, but a profound, inky blackness that seemed to absorb all light, all sound, all thought. It was a suffocating absence that pressed in on him, a silent scream echoing in the hollows of his being.
“Computer, report on internal temperature,” Deagan’s voice was a low rumble, betraying none of the turmoil churning within.
