The Martian soil, once a vibrant canvas of rust and ochre, receded from Deagan’s viewport, shrinking into a distant, crimson jewel. He was already adrift, a solitary mote of consciousness in the suffocating, star-dusted cloak of the void. The Mercury landing. The words still echoed in the sterile confines of his cockpit, a nonsensical directive plucked from the ethereal ether. Three days. Three days of triumphant solitude on a new world, a testament to human ingenuity, and then… a chill. Not the biting, biting cold of space, but an internal frost, a creeping dread that had seeped into his very marrow. And with it, the message.

*“You are needed. Mercury.”*

No explanation, no context, just an imperative that had bypassed protocol, bypassed reason, and lodged itself deep within his core. Commander Rostova’s voice, usually a steady beacon of pragmatism, had been laced with a bewildered frustration he’d rarely heard. “Deagan, the telemetry shows no anomalies. No external comms signal matching that… that directive. Are you certain?”
